How to deal with people with mental health problems

More than 80 per cent of the more than 2,400 people surveyed by The Irish News had a mental health condition, with the majority reporting a serious mental illness.

Read moreThe study, commissioned by the National Mental Health Alliance, found that more than 70 per cent reported being in some form of mental health crisis, with depression and anxiety a common diagnosis.

It also found that almost two-thirds of respondents reported having experienced “an adverse event” with a loved one, such as physical harm or emotional distress.

In total, the survey found that about 3.7 million people had a severe mental health problem.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, according to the report, which will be presented at the National Summit on Mental Health and Health Care on November 11.

The Irish News interviewed almost 2,200 people in its survey and interviewed over 600 more at the same time in January 2018.
