“I’m not a politician, I’m not going to pretend to be,” says Ms Fitzgerald.
“I have a great respect for our politicians.
I think the biggest thing they need to realise is that this is a serious job.”
“If you are not careful, you will be doing something that is going to get you killed,” she adds.
In recent weeks, the New England Journal of Medicine and the New York Times have published articles highlighting how the federal government has been increasingly focused on the prevention of autism and other diseases.
Ms Fitzgerald says it is important to remember the importance of a healthy workforce.
“When we are doing well, it is nice to think that we are going to be able to work out why we are failing, so that we can try and get a new approach to doing this,” she says.
“That is a good thing to be worried about.”
